Where can I get more information on Chrome?

There is a LOT of information here on Chrome.

Don’t let the “Technical” in the Technical Manual scare you away.  The Chrome v2 Technical Manual was written in plain English with pictures and pop-ups to make it easier for everyone to understand it.

Now I know that not everyone is computer litterate, BUT if you can install ECU Flash, EVO Scan, the Chrome v2 XML files, and get ECU Flash to recognize the ROM (.BIN) file, then you can understand the technical manual!

Just kidding on the pop-ups by the way.

What is a 482 EVO Style MAF and why upgrade?

The “482″ EVO Style MAF is typically found only on newer Mitsubishi vehicles and flows almost identical to the “399″ EVO MAF, ~61lbs/min maximum.  This MAF has a pressure drop of ~.54 psi at 240 liters/second.

The “399″ EVO MAF is found on the 4G63 EVO VIII/IX engine.  It is the highest flowing MAF available, flowing a maximum of ~62lbs/min with a pressure drop of ~.526 psi at 240 liters/second.  The “399″ EVO MAF is pretty much identical to the “482″ EVO STYLE MAF in both size and airflow.

The “501″ Montero MAF  is only rated by Mitsubishi for 210 liters/second, and has ~.78 psi pressure drop because of the larger air-horn blocking the inlet.

The “501″ Montero MAF is typically found in Mitsubishi vehicles with a 4G64 engine:

ECLIPSE 00-02 (All trims)
ECLIPSE 03-05 exc. GTS
GALANT 99-03
MONTERO SPORT 99-03 3.0L (6 cyl)
OUTLANDER 03
SEBRING 01-05 (Coupe)
STRATUS 01-05 (Coupe)

The stock VR4 MAF was usaully a 165 or 618 or 609 (depending on the year and model codes) and is typically only good for about ~50lbs/min.  The pressure drop is ~.75 psi at 210 liters/second.

So what does this number actually mean?  Well They are the last three digits of the Mitsubishi part number for that particular MAF.  i.e.: MD183609, MR578399, MD336482, MD336501, etc.

How to Identify Mitsubishi Injectors

Ordering (7)

I have a 1992 with a 1994 motor. What year do I order for?

You will always order for the model year of the chassis

UNLESS

Someone has already modified the factory wiring harness and replaced the ECU with a different year ECU.  Then you would order based upon the model year of the ECU.

For Example:

So even if you have a 1996 motor in a 1991 chassis, you would order a 1991 ECU

UNLESS

During the motor swap, you cut your factory wiring harness and spliced in the connectors from the 1996 car so you could use the newer ECU, then you would order based upon the model year of the ECU.

I have a CAL spec car that I converted to FED spec. What emissions spec do I order?

You would order for what ever emissions specification the chassis ORIGINALLY was BEFORE the “conversion”.

In the customer notes, please indicate that the vehicle has been “converted” along with the conversion information.  If there are any additional questions, then I will contact you and ask you about the conversion.

For the Turbo cars, normally, the conversion from CAL to FED will only impact the 1.5G (Hybrid) cars from 1994-1995 as the primary O2 lines are swapped and the later cars as the O2 heater lines are in different pin positions.

For the NA cars, there are a lot of issues related to the O2 sensors from 1994 and up.

Converting a car from CAL (California) emissions to FED (Federal) emissions is illegal unless the car is for off road race use only.

Can you provide a harness for my JDM or EURO 3000GT / GTO?

Absolutely!  I have all of the technical manuals for the non USDM (US Domestic Market) versions of the 3000GT / GTO and can provide a harness for both LH or RH drive models.

As a leader in the Clone ECU market, we have already provided a great deal of sales and support to the United Kingdom, France, and Australia providing solutions for both the LH and RH drive market.

It is important to note, that the US version of the car is SIGNIFICANTLY different in respect to the ECU compared to the worldwide market.  Especially where the immobilizer is concerned.

Please provide in the ordering notes the Model Code (will look something like Zl6AMJGFR6) and the Chassis Number (will look something like JMBMNZ16APY000001), RHD or LHD, transmission, the model year, and weather or not you have an immobilizer.  This will ensure that you get the correct harness the FIRST time.

What is different between the LH and RH drive models?

In regards to the ECU, not much.  basically, the connector positions and nomenclature are different because of the differences in the dashboard and chassis wiring.  But the ECU connector is the same and the pin outs are the same.

As a leader in the Clone ECU market, we have already provided a great deal of sales and support to the United Kingdom, France, and Australia providing solutions for both the LH and RH drive market.

My car has an immobilzer. Will the Clone2 work?

Absolutely!  It is important to note that the immobilizer function will be defeated with the Clone2 ECU as the Chrome Software does NOT provide support for the immobilizer.

It is also important to note that depending on the model year, important functions, like the fuel pump relay are on different pin posisitons.

Do I need to purchase the Fan Control Harness for my 1G?

No you do not UNLESS you want ECU controlled fans.  The advantages are that the ECU has much more elegant control of the Fans than the thermostatic switch in the radiator.

I just ordered an ECU. Which ROM is on the ECU?

When I see that a coupon code was used to purchase a Clone2 ECU or Clone2 Plug n’ Play Package two things happen.

  1. Your ECU is pre-flashed with Chrome v2.0.1 (or Chrome SL)
  2. You are provided direct access to both Chrome v2.0 and Chrome v2.0.1 (or Chrome SL) on your My Account screen.  You can download Chrome v2.0 and Chrome v2.0.1 (or Chrome SL)  from there!

If a coupon code was NOT used to purchase the ECU, unless I recognize the email from the Chrome Donation list, your ECU will be pre-flashed with the Mitsubishi Stock ROM.

General (4)

How long is the Warranty?

Originally, the warranty was 1 year.  But since there have been no problems in all of the ECU’s that have been sold (except for the occasional brick), the warranty has been extended to THREE years, and this covers all prior sales.  That’s right.  If you bought your ECU a year ago, you are now covered under the new warranty!

You can view the terms of the warranty here!

Where can I find the Warranty Information?

The Clone Warranty can be viewed here!

Are you and Greg (Chrome) in business together?

Greg E (Monochrome) who has spent hours developing the Chrome ROM is a SEPERATE entity from ALL of the hardware manufactures.  This includes Clone ECU and Chromed ECU.

Since Greg does NOT have his own website (Clone ECU and Chromed ECU are not owned or operated by Greg), his software is available for donation and download from a variety of places including here.

I found the US Factory Diagrams. Where are the JDM / EURO diagrams?

The JDM / EURO 3000GT / GTO technical information will only be provided to Clone2 Customers by request.

Chrome (9)

Does Chrome support Speed Density?

As of now, Chrome does not directly support speed density.  If you wish to run a speed density setup, you will need a MAFT-PRO, ARC2, or another piggy back.

The good news is you can run it “Zeroed” out as you no longer have to lie to the ECU about your airflow!

How do I / Can I download Chrome v2.0 AND Chrome v2.0.1?

Yes you can – IF you donated!

Get the Mitsubishi Factory ROM (It’s FREE!).  You will need to create an account.

In the order notes please provide the original paypal email that you used to donate for Chrome 2.0 or Chorme SL.

After verification, I will provide you direct access to both Chrome v2.0 and Chrome v2.0.1 on your My Account screen.  You can download Chrome v2.0 and Chrome v2.0.1 from there!

How do I re-download Chrome? Its been more than 7 days.

If you donated for Chrome 2.0 and you were provided a link to download Chrome v2.0 in an email, the email stated that the download expires in 7 days.  This is no longer the case.  The download period has been extended so that you can re-download Chrome v2.0.1 which corrected an active exhaust issue.

Older emails that linked to ecu.upstageproductionsinc.org will AUTOMATICALLY be forwarded and accepted right here on CloneEcu.com!

Do I have to donate to get Chrome?

Chrome v2.0, Chrome v2.0.1, and Chrome SL v1.0 are donationware and the donation is REQUIRED.

What this means is that you HAVE to donate SOMETHING in order to get Chromed.  This is not shareware, crippleware, or freeware.  Greg E (Monochrome) has spent THOUSANDS of hours of coding in order to provide you with a great ROM for our platform.  He deserves to get something for his time.

The donation amount is left up to the discretion of the user, based on individual perceptions of the software’s value.  In this case you trust that this ROM will run your car down the track with out self-destructing.  I would place the value easily around $50.00 USD, wouldn’t you?  A new motor costs more than that!

Why should I donate if I can get it for free from…?

Quite simply, support.  Greg checks all of his incoming support lists against the donation list.  If you are not on it, you can expect to get minimal support if any at all.

Can I donate $1 or even $.01?

Chrome v2.0, Chrome v2.0.1, and Chrome SL v1.0 are donationware and the donation is REQUIRED.

Technical (8)

How do I setup a MAF-T with the Clone2 ECU?

Setting up a MAF-T for a GM MAF in blow through or not, is really simple:

[notification type=”info”]Note: You do not need to connect the “White” translator wire to a tach signal, as you are not going to be using the RPM mode. [/notification]

  1. No matter what size MAF you have (3″ or 3.5″), you set the MAF-T for a 3″.  Set ALL the Mode Switches to “OFF”.
  2. Then you zero out all the adjustments.  Set the MAF Mode AUX, Idle, Mid, and WOT dials to “0”.
  3. Then you add 5% to the base MAP.  Set the MAF Mode Base dial to “1” which adds 5%.

That’s it.  Now you can start tuning your car in the ROM!

Weak vs Strong GM MAF Sensors

GM LS3/L99 and LS7 MAF Sensor

Designed to provide a smooth idle and consistent power throughout the entire powerband. GM offered MAF sensors that were manufactured by 2 difference manufactures; there is a “weak” and a “strong” sensor. The “weak” sensors do not show the same resistance levels as the “strong” sensors. The MAF sensors that have been identified as “weak” read 1560-1670HZ at idle while a “strong” MAF reads at 1800MHZ. When driving on the road at partial throttle the MHZ are slow and weak in response to throttle changes which is what causes the hesitation. When at wide open throttle the “weak” MAF shows 120-170MHZ lower than the 8600MHZ “strong” MAF sensors show on the same car. The fuel trims with a “weak” MAF can range from -25% on the high end to -3% with a simple aftermarket panel replacement filter. Simply remove the “weak” sensor and install a “strong” sensor and within seconds the fuel trims go to 0% and MHZ are back to 1800+. This will completely change the responsiveness of the car.

How to determine if you have the “weak” MAF Sensor

When the MAF sensor is removed you will see an indented portion on the back side. Within this indented section there will be a letter or a letter followed by a number like the MAF shown above. If you have a MAF with a single letter you have a “weak” MAF sensor and if you’re MAF has a letter followed by a number you have a strong sensor. If you already have the “strong” sensor you have nothing to worry about.
